Lake Sammamish State Park • May 21, 2026

Lake Sammamish State Park offers a trail through woods with views of Lake Sammamish from Sunset Beach to where the north end of Issaquah Creek empties into the lake. Although the trail is short, it's easy to spend 90 minutes enjoying the birds. We started when the park opened at 6:30, about an hour after sunrise.

About halfway down the trail, Cathy spotted this bald eagle perched high up on a snag. It was facing away surveying the area and turned far enough to offer a profile in the sun.

At the end of the trail, we turned back to find it was still there.

A bit later, Cathy noticed a bald eagle soaring and we assumed it was the same eagle off the perch. Tom started tracking it and taking photos in flight only to discover it was a second bald eagle coming in for a landing on the other tine of the fork.

After the landing, they both seemed to have something to say!

Their conversation kept going for a quite a while.

We saw them again from the original view point, still perched together.

We had a nice chat with another birder who was also taking photos of the eagles. We each shared what we had seen and she let us know about a pair of trees on the way back where a hummingbird likes to perch. Indeed it does. We saw him perch and fly away a few times.
