Hairy Woodpecker • May 24, 2025

Just a few days after spending 11 weeks watching the owls in our backyard, we noticed recurring chirping in the woods to the side of our garage. Tom was heading out to run some errands and realized it sounded like what we've heard with woodpecker chicks in previous years and looked around until he found the hairy woodpecker nest. The birds had to be recorded! Out came the camera and tripod. So much for the errands.

Right away, we could see a chick poking its head out and chirping incessantly.

Feedings seemed to be frequent, with three observed in about half an hour.

After getting some stills, Tom decided he also wanted video of a feeding. Switching to video mode, finger ready to hit the record button, he watched for another hour without seeing a single feeding. When it was time for our lunch, he had the camera record video while we ate.

After lunch, he swapped cards, started another recording session, and reviewed the hour-long video. We were hoping to capture a feeding, but instead captured a fledging! It took us all that time to get an owl fledging, then a woodpecker nest gives one up within two hours of when we found it!
