We visited Juanita Bay Park at sunrise.

It seems like most of our bird walks begin with a feral rabbit sighting. Juanita Bay Park was teeming with them.

Members of the mallard population in this little cove were regularly taking off or returning, often announcing their flights. Quack quack QUACK.

Richard, a birder we met at the park, pointed out this newly fledged red-winged blackbird hidden in the grass near the boardwalk. The little bird was calmly preening and difficult to spot. When Mom came back, it got quite excited, chirping, opening its mouth and raising its wings.

After the chick was fed, it flew up to the boardwalk railing to bask in the rising sun.
