In reading over the hotel's schedule of events, Cathy noticed that there was a parrot show this morning. We were expecting a show with the birds talking, looking beautiful and doing stupid pet tricks. Instead, we were treated to an informal gathering orchestrated by a woman on the hotel staff that clearly loves the birds. She showed us the birds, told us lots of things about them, reminded us that these birds are among the many victims of the destruction of the rain forests, and let us try our hands at being bird perches.
The afternoon was spent mostly unsuccessfully chasing sights on the north coast. We wanted to see the Kilauea Lighthouse, but it's only visible from a bird sanctuary that is open between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., something not mentioned in our guidebook. We got there at 4:05. We also wanted to see the Queen's Bath, but access to that seems to have fallen victim to a rather swank development. We did, however, get to see another Rorschach mountain outline -- Kalalea Mountain looks like a reclining King Kong. Someone told us that the 1976 remake of King Kong was filmed in that area.
Fortunately, the trip to the north coast was not without its rewards. There, we met up with David and Liz Oliver, friends from work, and had a nice visit and dinner with them.
