Tom & Cathy Visit Kauai - Day 3

Our day's activities started with a quick trip to see the 'Opaeka'a Falls.

Then it was time for a little shopping before heading down to the Spouting Horn. There, water crashes into lava tubes in this particular formation forcing water to jet out of openings at the top.

After lunch, we headed to Kekaha on the southwest portion of the island to meet up with Tom's Mom's cousin Dave and his wife Alna. They were kind enough to take us on a dramatic and stunning 4-wheel-drive trek up the mountains to see Waimea Canyon and to hike through the forest. The views of the canyon were stunning, enhanced by a vivid rainbow over the falls.

Unfortunately, the rain that made the view of the canyon so spectacular made the hiking plan somewhat impractical. As you can see below, what is normally a small creek which runs over the road was turned into an impassable river.

where we stopped.

Despite (and to some extent because of) the weather, the ride up the mountain was beautiful and exciting. On the way down we were treated to a colorful sunset. We were joined by Dave and Alna's daughter, and they treated us to dinner afterwards to talk about the day's activities and get better acquainted.
