Aurora Borealis Snoqualmie, WA May 10, 2024
It's rare to see the aurora borealis (aka northern lights) as far south as the Seattle area,
but we were fortunate to see it near home a few times this year.
These photos were taken from a park in Snoqualmie, WA. It's a small park, and was packed with
many enthusiastic astronomy fans. It was fun to hear the reactions as the sky darkened and the aurora
started to appear.
When we saw the aurora in Churchill, Canada,
the colors were visible naked-eye. For the aurora in Snoqualmie, the aurora appeared as wispy white texture.
Its shape and movement were apparent, but the colors weren't visible except through photographs.
The photos below were taken with a Canon R3 mirrorless camera and Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 lens (at 15mm),
with white balance set to 3500K.
